Solidarity worldwide and close to the people
Solidarity Service International (SODI) is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation and realises sustainable projects in the field of development cooperation and provides humanitarian assistance to victims of natural disasters and wars. Founded in 1990, SODI and its partners have realised more than 900 projects in 32 countries. SODI is independent of political parties and religious communities and supported by more than 380 members.
SODI stands for a world of solidarity, peace and justice in which democracy and human rights are respected and the environment is preserved. SODI is a legal successor to the GDR Solidarity Committee and considers itself as being part of an international solidarity movement for a humane world where people are able to live in dignity.
Reflecting its history, SODI takes up past achievements of international solidarity in the fight against fascism, colonialism, racism and apartheid. In close cooperation with women's organisations, trade unions, local and religious communities, SODI realises sustainable self-help projects in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Locals as drivers of change
All Projects are based on proposals of SODI's project partners, active participation of local communities and are a process of mutual learning and understanding. The projects aim to strengthen people's self-help capabilities, to fight poverty and to improve human rights. SODI's main activities:
- Sustainable development
- Empowering women and children
- Fighting poverty
- Overcoming war legacies
- Help in emergencies
Furthermore SODI combines its self-help projects with projects of public awareness building for development issues in Germany such as actions, events, workshops, publications and global learning at schools. We work in national and international networks like Global Call for Action, Erlassjahr.de, Attac.
